Excellent Utilities: fd – superior alternative to the venerable find

Last Updated on May 22, 2022

Summary

Think of fd as an alternative, rather than a replacement, to find. It doesn’t everything that find offers. For example, complex logic operations aren’t available, nor very fine-grained file access time queries. But the gap in functionality is closing. For example, version 8.1.0 adds the ability to filter results by ownership. fd is a rather splendid alternative.

fd makes some sensible choices which mean you can often run fd without any arguments. By default fd ignores hidden files, directories, as well as .gitignore patterns. But these defaults can be disabled.

fd has attracted over 15k GitHub stars.
