Summary
It’s true that a screen saver doesn’t protect hardware like days of old. But we’re big fans of anything to liven up the Linux desktop. And XScreenSaver is a fine candidate for inclusion in our Linux Candy series. It offers a huge range of different screen savers, and there’s tons of options to boot. We have so many favorites there’s too many to list. But we’re partial to TimeTunnel, Twang, and UnknownPleasures to name just three.
This project has been in development since 1991 and it’s still under development.
For the technically minded, the display modes are sandboxed into a separate process from the screen locking framework. This means that a bug in one of the graphical display modes doesn’t compromise the screen locker itself (e.g., a crash in a display mode will not unlock the screen).
