InterGenOS is a Linux distribution built from source using Linux From Scratch and Beyond Linux From Scratch as its foundations. The distribution focuses on security, transparency and user control, with a customized GNOME desktop running on Wayland.
The distribution incorporates several purpose-built components, including the pkm package manager, the FORGE system installer and a source-based build system. It employs cryptographic verification of installation media and software packages, together with a signed boot chain. The installer supports encrypted storage and generates a Machine Owner Key for systems using UEFI Secure Boot.
InterGenOS also includes InterGen, a local AI assistant intended to help users understand, administer and secure their systems. The assistant selects language models according to available hardware and can operate without cloud services. Privileged actions require user approval, while optional cloud integrations are available for tasks requiring external assistance.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")? |
| A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system. Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies. Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros. |
