Summary
We like many aspects of EDEX-UI including its boot sequence. Maybe someone can make a similar boot sequence for Emacs; after all that’s almost an operating system. Maybe it already exists?
eDEX-UI is definitely not going to replace our favourite terminal emulator and system monitoring tools. It doesn’t really enhance our productivity but whether that applies to you depends on your workflow. It might float your boat. And it looks great, definitely warranting inclusion in this Linux Candy series.
Even though there’s plenty of customization options, we find its rigid panel structure a tad too restrictive for our workflow. For example, we really don’t need most of the system information permanently to hand.
As the program uses Electron and other web technologies, eDEX-UI has a pretty hefty memory footprint. ps_mem reports that the program uses over 700MB of RAM.
