3D Periodic Table is an interactive visualization of the chemical elements that uses the third dimension to help expose differences and trends in element properties.
Instead of restricting the display to a conventional flat grid, each element is represented within an interactive Three.js scene. The height and appearance of the elements can be altered according to the property being examined. Users can rotate and zoom the scene, select an element for additional information and change how the data is represented.
The application is built with React, TypeScript and React Three Fiber, with Material UI providing interface components.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Displays the complete periodic table as an interactive three-dimensional scene.
- Preserves the familiar periodic-table arrangement including the lanthanide and actinide series.
- Represents selected element properties using pillar height.
- Lets users choose which chemical or physical property controls the visualization.
- Offers configurable maximum-height scaling.
- Supports logarithmic scaling for properties spanning wide numerical ranges.
- Lets users rotate the periodic table freely in three dimensions.
- Provides zoom controls with defined near and far viewing limits.
- Displays additional information when an individual element is selected.
- Can color elements according to their displayed height.
- Provides coloring by element category.
- Provides coloring according to periodic-table block.
- Can represent the physical phase of elements through coloring.
- Displays contextual legends for category, block and phase views.
- Lets users choose the colors used for continuous property visualization.
- Includes temperature as a configurable parameter for applicable representations.
- Uses chemical-element data derived from openly available periodic-table datasets.
- Includes data concerning the abundance of elements in the Earth’s crust.
