Azote is a GTK3 wallpaper browser and background setter developed primarily for wlroots-based Wayland compositors. It provides a graphical frontend to wallpaper-setting tools rather than handling the desktop background entirely on its own.
The application uses swaybg on supported Wayland compositors and feh on X11 window managers. It works with environments such as Sway, Wayfire, Hyprland, i3, Openbox, Fluxbox and dwm. GNOME is not supported.
Azote is particularly useful on multi-monitor desktops. It can scale, crop and split wallpapers across displays, using either detected screen dimensions or sizes specified by the user. Images can also be applied to all screens, including displays that are not currently connected.
Beyond wallpaper management, Azote includes colour tools for generating palettes from images, picking colours from the screen and editing colour definitions in configuration files. It forms part of the nwg-shell project.
