wpaperd is a wallpaper daemon for Wayland which can automatically change desktop backgrounds while offering per-display configuration and hardware-accelerated transitions.
The software can display a fixed wallpaper or select images from a directory. When a directory is configured, wallpapers can be changed after a specified period and selected in ascending, descending or random order.
Different wallpapers can be configured for individual displays. Displays may also be grouped so that several outputs share the same wallpaper when random selection is enabled. Regular-expression based output matching makes more complex multi-monitor configurations possible.
wpaperd is controlled through a TOML configuration file and the accompanying wpaperctl command-line utility. Configuration changes can be reloaded while the daemon is running. wpaperctl can move to the next or previous wallpaper, pause and resume automatic cycling, or immediately set a particular image.
The daemon uses OpenGL ES to render images and transitions. Transition timing can be configured, and several image placement modes are available including fit, centre, stretch and tile.
This is free and open source software.
