Matuwall is a lightweight graphical wallpaper picker designed specifically for Wayland desktops. It provides a quick visual way to browse a local wallpaper collection, preview images and apply a selected image without turning wallpaper management into a large desktop application.
The program displays wallpapers as image thumbnails and can arrange them in a conventional grid or a centred carousel. The number of columns and visible rows can be adjusted, while thumbnail dimensions, spacing, margins and corner radii are configurable.
A full-screen preview mode lets users see a wallpaper against the desktop before making a selection. Matuwall can also be told which output to appear on, which is useful on systems with multiple monitors.
Wallpaper application is delegated to a supported backend. awww is the default, while sweetbg is also supported. An automatic mode can detect a suitable running backend rather than requiring one to be specified manually.
Configuration can be stored in a TOML file under the user’s configuration directory. Almost all of the main settings can also be supplied as command-line options, making it straightforward to create different launchers or invoke Matuwall with temporary settings.
This is free and open source software.
