Evince – document viewer for multiple document formats

Evince is a document viewer for multiple document formats. It currently supports PDF, Postscript, DjVu, TIFF and DVI formats. The goal of Evince is to replace the multiple document viewers that exist in the GNOME Desktop with a single easy to use application.

The software shares much of the functionality offered by Adobe Reader with the exception of bookmarking, PDF files with JavaScript animation, and PDF Browser plugins.

Evince has a similar feature set to Adobe Reader. It is not as quick as Adobe Reader at rendering complex PDF documents. Neither does Evince currently have any browser plugin functionality.

Key Features

  • Integrated search displaying the number of results found and highlights the results on the page.
  • Page Thumbnails.
  • Document Indexes – When index information is included in a PDF, Evince will display it in a tree format.
  • Document Printing – using the GNOME/GTK printing framework Evince can print any document it can open.
  • Encrypted Document Viewing.

Formats supported:

  • Portable Document Format (PDF) using the Poppler backend.
  • Postscript using the GhostScript backend.
  • Multi-Page Tagged Image File Format (TIFF).
  • Impress.
  • DjVu using the DjVuLibre backend.
  • DeVice Independent (DVI) – the output format of the TeX typesetting software.
  • Comics.
  • Images.
