The program can be run without any arguments to enter the live search.
Here is a very short video of emoj showing the live search in action. As you can see, emojis are displayed as we type text into the terminal. The video ends with one of the emojis being copied to the clipboard. We can either use left/right keys to select the emoji or the 1 to 9 keys.
There’s the option to use up/down keys during the live search to change the skin tone. Alternatively, the skin tone can be set and persist by starting emoj with the --skin-tone or -s flag.
Summary
emoj is a really simple tool that lets you find suitable emojis for pasting to your clipboard, and then on to other applications. The local emoji database isn’t the widest.
If you prefer a GUI, we recommend Emote.
Emojis are more than mere candy and have a serious aspect in communication. For example, in countries where individual freedoms are not respected, emojis can be used to evade censors conveying information to protest against a government’s actions.

There are a diverse range of programs included in this series. Programs such as eDEX-UI and Variety are actually highly practical programs. ASCIIQuarium has soothing and relaxing qualities for your desktop. Other programs included in this series (such as lolcat, cacafire) are included purely for their decorative qualities. And then there’s some software that’s really light-hearted and designed just to bring a smile.
