tiptop is a terminal system monitor that presents resource statistics using a colourful, widget-based interface. It draws inspiration from traditional tools such as top while offering a more graphical way to observe system activity.
tiptop is aimed at users who want a quick overview of resource usage without leaving the terminal. Its approach is particularly attractive for developers who already spend much of their working day in a shell and prefer live charts to pages of numerical output.
It uses Textual to construct its terminal interface and psutil to obtain system information, separating the presentation of monitoring data from the underlying operating system queries.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Presents live system statistics in a terminal dashboard with graphical visualisations.
- Uses the Textual framework for its interactive terminal interface.
- Collects system information through psutil, providing a common monitoring backend across supported platforms.
- Offers network-interface selection through the
--netcommand-line option, useful on machines with multiple network connections. - Supports diagnostic logging through the
--logoption. - Cross-platform support – runs under Linux, macOS and Windows.
