novelibre – novel organizer for writers

novelibre is a novel organizer for writers who use LibreOffice or OpenOffice.

It helps manage large writing projects by keeping manuscript structure and project metadata together, allowing authors to plan, draft, and revise without losing track of story information. The application works alongside Writer, generating structured ODT manuscripts for editing and then reimporting changes back into the project.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Provides a tree-based workspace for organising novels into parts, chapters, and sections.
  • Generates synopses and tables from project summaries and other stored metadata.
  • Includes plotting tools such as story structure stages, plot lines, plot points, and a plot grid for seeing the big picture.
  • Displays section word counts and completion status, and can mark chapters or sections as unused for export.
  • Can record story time and duration information, including dates and character ages, and can synchronise date and time data with timeline software.
  • Exports neatly formatted OpenDocument Text manuscripts for LibreOffice or OpenOffice Writer and reimports changes into the writing project.
  • Saves projects in a documented XML-based .novx format and supports optional plugins for EPUB export, statistics, templates, collections, themes, and timeline integration.
