omping (Open Multicast Ping) is a command-line utility for testing IP multicast communication. It is primarily intended for diagnosing multicast connectivity between hosts on a local network.
Multicast networking allows traffic to be delivered to groups of receivers without sending an independent copy to every destination. Unlike ordinary ping, which tests communication with an individual host, omping helps investigate whether multicast traffic is being delivered to the intended participants.
The application is useful when configuring switches, routers and applications that depend on multicast delivery. It can help identify problems involving multicast group membership, forwarding behaviour and communication between participating hosts.
This is free and open source software.
