split-ping is a network diagnostic utility designed to identify the direction in which packet loss or latency occurs between two hosts. This information can be valuable when troubleshooting network links where a conventional round-trip ping measurement does not reveal the source of a problem.
The application uses cooperating endpoints to exchange measurements. Rather than reporting only the total round-trip delay, it attempts to distinguish latency and loss associated with traffic travelling in each direction.
split-ping is particularly useful for investigating asymmetric network congestion and other difficult connectivity problems. It also exposes measurement information through a metrics interface, allowing results to be collected and examined using external monitoring systems.
The executable is named sping. This project is separate from the Rust-based sping utility developed by LambdaBytes.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Measure packet loss separately for incoming and outgoing traffic.
- Investigate directional latency between participating hosts.
- UDP communication for exchanging measurement information.
- Configure peer addresses for bi-directional testing.
- Report directional statistics through command-line diagnostics.
- Prometheus-compatible metrics for network monitoring.
- Customisable metrics endpoint and listening address.
- Optional pulse-per-second timing support.
- Timing calibration and diagnostic output controls.
- Useful for examining asymmetric network problems.
