BWPing is a network measurement utility for estimating bandwidth and response times between two hosts. It uses ICMP echo requests and replies to examine network performance without requiring a dedicated measurement server at the remote endpoint.
The application is intended for situations where traditional ping measurements do not provide enough information about available network capacity. By sending appropriately configured traffic, BWPing can estimate throughput and investigate how response times behave during testing.
BWPing supports IPv4 and IPv6 networks. Its accuracy depends on the behaviour of the network and remote host, including any limits imposed on ICMP traffic. The results should therefore be interpreted as measurements of the tested path rather than guaranteed application throughput.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Estimate network bandwidth using ICMP echo traffic.
- Measure round-trip response times between hosts.
- Operate without installing a special server on the remote system.
- Support both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.
- Configure packet size and test duration.
- Control transmission parameters for different measurement conditions.
- Investigate the relationship between packet transmission and response times.
- Report measurement results through a command-line interface.
- Use raw sockets for sending and receiving ICMP packets.
