Linux Candy: walrs – fast colorscheme generator

Linux Candy is a series of articles covering interesting eye candy software. We only feature open source software in this series.

Some of the programs in this series are purely cosmetic, frivolous pieces of fun. Candy at their finest. But we also include some programs that aren’t purely decorative.

There’s a diverse range of programs included in this series. Programs such as eDEX-UI and Variety are actually highly practical programs. ASCIIQuarium has soothing and relaxing qualities for your desktop. Other programs included in this series (such as lolcat, cacafire) are included purely for their decorative qualities. And then there’s some really fun software that just raises a smile or two.

walrs is a command-line program that generates a color scheme from the dominant colors in an image. This palette can then be applied system-wide and on the fly in various programs.

Installation

We evaluated walrs with Manjaro, a popular Arch-based Linux distribution, and Ubuntu 25.04.

We manually installed the software. First clone the project’s GitHub repository with the command:

$ git clone https://github.com/pixel2175/walrs.git

Cloning the GitHub repository

Change into the newly created folder:

$ cd walrs

Now we can build and install the program:

$ make install

The image below shows the final output.

Building walrs

In Operation

We can generate a color scheme from an image by using the -ioption e.g.

$ walrs -i ~/PicsG/fantastic-nacional-palace-pena-sintra-lisbon-portugal-europe.jpg

Example color scheme

The command also sets the background image by using an external program (such as xwallpaper, feh, hsetroot, nitrogen, or gsettings).

Features include:

  • Rust-based: Fast and minimal resource usage.
  • Generate terminal color schemes from images.
  • Reload themes instantly.
  • Compatible with pywal templates.
  • Seamless integration with various terminal emulators including Hyper and applications.
  • Specify the saturation and brightness value.

Summary

walrs is a handy command-line utility for generating color schemes. It’s lightweight and fast.
