Text Editor

Bibisco – novel writing software

Bibisco is a novel-writing environment designed around the idea that producing a book involves more than entering prose into a text editor. It helps authors develop the structure of a story and maintain the information needed to keep a growing manuscript coherent.

Character development is given particular attention. Writers can explore personality, background, motivations and relationships alongside the chapters and scenes where those characters appear. The Community Edition is the edition covered by this entry.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Organise a novel into chapters and individual scenes.
  • Define the premise and develop the overall structure of a story.
  • Model the fabula and maintain separate narrative strands.
  • Describe geographic, temporal and social settings.
  • Develop characters through structured questions covering background, personality and motivation.
  • Track how characters, locations and narrative strands are distributed through the manuscript.
  • Write and revise scenes using the integrated text editor.
  • Manage revisions as the manuscript develops.
  • Search across project material rather than treating each chapter as an isolated document.
  • Maintain several writing projects from the same application.
  • Export completed work to common document formats including PDF and DOCX.
  • Cross-platform support – runs on Linux, macOS and Windows.
