Dexed is an FM synthesizer closely modelled on the Yamaha DX7. Its focus is compatibility with the classic instrument rather than adding unrelated synthesis engines, making it a practical way to explore the sounds and programming approach of six-operator frequency modulation.
FM synthesis creates complex tones by varying the frequency of one oscillator with the output of another. Dexed exposes the DX7-style operators, algorithms and envelopes through a graphical editor, allowing sounds to be designed without the original hardware interface.
It also serves as a companion for musicians who own a DX7, providing facilities for working with patch cartridges and SysEx data.
This is free and open source software.
