hybrid-d77 – Chimera Linux-based distribution with Sway and niri

hybrid-d77 is a Chimera Linux-based distribution developed by Daniel Azevedo, the creator of d77void. It combines the Linux kernel with a FreeBSD-derived userland and provides a preconfigured Wayland desktop environment. Unlike a standard Chimera installation, it includes desktop configurations, additional utilities and installation tools.

The distribution offers two variants. One uses the Sway tiling compositor with Waybar, while the other uses niri, a scrollable tiling compositor, with Utumno, a desktop shell built using Quickshell. Both provide keyboard-driven desktop workflows with integrated application launchers, notifications and screen locking.

hybrid-d77 uses the dinit service manager instead of systemd and retains Chimera’s apk package manager. It includes a modified version of Chimera’s installation scripts, offering disk partitioning, filesystem configuration, network settings and service selection. A separate graphical installer, Mocinha, is also available experimentally.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")?

A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system.

Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies.

Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros.
