QtConsole is a lightweight graphical console for working interactively with Jupyter kernels. It combines the familiar command-driven workflow of a terminal with the richer display capabilities of a desktop application.
The console provides a convenient environment for executing Python code, inspecting results and working with scientific data. Unlike a conventional terminal, it can display figures directly alongside commands and their output, making it particularly useful for exploratory analysis and visualisation.
QtConsole uses Jupyter’s kernel architecture, which separates the graphical frontend from the process executing code. It can run independently or be embedded in another Qt application, and is maintained by the Spyder development team.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Interactive console interface supporting Jupyter kernels, including IPython and other compatible languages.
- Display Matplotlib figures and other graphical output directly within the console.
- Multiline code editing with syntax highlighting and graphical calltips.
- Configurable syntax highlighting through Pygments styles and custom CSS stylesheets.
- Emacs-style keyboard shortcuts for navigating and editing code.
- Export console sessions to HTML or XHTML, including embedded graphical output.
- Print console sessions directly from the graphical interface.
- Connect multiple console frontends to an existing Jupyter kernel.
- Connect to remote kernels, including through SSH tunnels.
- Restart or interrupt kernels independently of the console frontend.
- Detect kernel failures and provide facilities for restarting execution.
- Embed the console widget within other Qt applications.
- Customise font families, font sizes, colours and interface appearance.
- Support for displaying rich output while preserving an interactive command-driven workflow.
- Independent kernel processes allow the frontend to remain responsive during lengthy computations.
- Cross-platform support – runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows.
