Best Free and Open Source Alternatives to Roxio Easy CD & DVD Burning

Corel Corporation is a Canadian software company specializing in graphics processing. They are best known for developing CorelDRAW, a vector graphics editor. They are also notable for purchasing and developing AfterShot Pro, PaintShop Pro, Painter, Video Studio, MindManager, and WordPerfect.

Corel has dabbled with Linux over the years. For example they produced Corel Linux, a Debian-based distribution which bundled Corel WordPerfect Office for Linux. While Corel effectively abandoned its Linux business in 2001 they are not completely Linux-phobic. For example, AfterShot Pro has an up to date Linux version albeit its proprietary software.

This series looks at the best free and open source alternatives to products offered by Corel. Roxio became part of Corel in 2012 when Corel acquired the Roxio business from Rovi Corporation.

Roxio Easy CD & DVD Burning is software for burning and copying CDs and DVDs. It can create data and audio discs, burn ISO images, rip audio CDs, erase rewritable media, and back up files to optical discs.

The software also includes tools for converting audio and video and creating DVD-Video discs with menus and chapters.

Easy CD & DVD Burning is proprietary software and is not available for Linux. Here are our recommended free and open source alternatives.

1. K3b

K3b is the closest all-round alternative to Roxio Easy CD & DVD Burning.

It handles data CDs and DVDs, audio CDs, disc copying, ISO images, rewritable media and Blu-ray discs. It can also rip audio CDs and offers extensive control over the burning process.

Despite its extensive functionality, K3b has a straightforward graphical interface and works well for both simple burning jobs and more advanced optical-disc projects.

2. Brasero

Brasero is a straightforward CD and DVD burning application designed for the GNOME desktop.

It can create data and audio discs, copy CDs and DVDs, burn disc images, erase rewritable media and save burning projects for later use.

Brasero offers fewer advanced options than K3b, but its simpler interface makes it a good choice for routine disc-burning tasks.

3. Xfburn

Xfburn is a lightweight CD and DVD burning application from the Xfce project.

It can create and burn data CDs and DVDs, create and burn ISO images, copy CDs and erase rewritable discs.

Xfburn is particularly attractive if you want a small, uncomplicated graphical application without the broader feature set offered by K3b.

4. DVDStyler

DVDStyler is the strongest alternative for the DVD authoring features included with Roxio Easy CD & DVD Burning.

It creates DVD-Video discs with interactive menus, chapters, multiple titles, audio tracks and subtitles. Menus can be built from templates or customised with backgrounds, text, images and buttons.

DVDStyler can also burn the completed project to DVD, making it useful when the goal is a disc that can be played in a conventional DVD player rather than simply storing files on optical media.
