Best Free and Open Source Alternatives to Adobe RoboHelp

Adobe is a large multinational computer software company. Its best-known products include Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro and Acrobat.

We are long-standing admirers of Adobe’s products. They develop many high quality proprietary programs. It’s true there are security and privacy concerns in relation to some of their products. And there’s considerable criticism attached to their pricing practices. But for Linux users there is another fundamental problem. Many of Adobe’s desktop applications are simply not available for Linux.

What if you are looking to move away from Adobe and embrace free and open source software? Our recommended software doesn’t necessarily replicate every feature of its Adobe counterpart, but it offers sufficient functionality for many tasks.

Adobe RoboHelp is a help authoring tool designed for creating and publishing online help, knowledge bases, policies and procedures, user guides, and other technical content. It supports reusable content and can publish material in formats including responsive HTML5 and PDF.

RoboHelp is proprietary software and is not available for Linux. We recommend the best free and open source alternatives.

1. Sphinx

Sphinx is a powerful documentation generator that turns plain text source files into professional documentation.

It has particularly strong support for technical documentation, with automatic cross-referencing, indexes, syntax highlighting, hierarchical document structures, and an extensive extension system.

Sphinx uses reStructuredText by default, with Markdown support available, and can generate HTML, PDF, ePub, manual pages and other output formats. Although it was originally created for Python documentation, Sphinx is suitable for a much broader range of documentation projects.

For technical authors comfortable with a docs-as-code workflow, Sphinx offers considerably more flexibility than a traditional graphical help authoring tool.

2. MkDocs

MkDocs is a static site generator specifically designed for building project documentation.

Documentation is written in Markdown and the project is configured using a single YAML file. MkDocs then generates a complete static HTML website that can be hosted almost anywhere.

The software offers a built-in development server, automatic rebuilding while editing, themes, Markdown extensions, plugins, navigation controls and search.

MkDocs is particularly attractive if you want a simpler alternative to RoboHelp and your main requirement is producing attractive web-based documentation rather than publishing to a wide range of output formats.

3. Antora

Antora is a modular documentation site generator aimed squarely at docs-as-code workflows.

It uses AsciiDoc for authoring and can collect documentation from one or more Git repositories, combining the material into a single documentation website. Content can be organised into components and versions, making Antora particularly useful for documenting large software projects with multiple releases.

Documentation, configuration and presentation are kept separate, while branches and tags can be used to manage different versions of documentation.

Antora is an excellent choice for organisations that need structured, versioned technical documentation maintained alongside their source code. Its ability to assemble content spread across multiple repositories distinguishes it from simpler documentation generators.
