50 Excellent GNOME Shell Extensions for GNOME 50

Desktop, Device & Media Integration continued

49. Hanabi

If you like eye candy, you’ll love Hanabi.

It provides live video wallpapers for the GNOME desktop, allowing the background to become something considerably more dynamic than a static image.

Video wallpapers are inevitably more demanding on system resources than ordinary backgrounds, so Hanabi isn’t something we’d use on every machine.

But on a desktop where power consumption is less important, it can produce a striking effect and remains one of the more unusual GNOME Shell extensions.

50. AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support

Appindicator
GNOME Shell does not natively expose the traditional system tray in the way many desktop environments do.

AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support restores support for AppIndicator, KStatusNotifierItem and legacy tray icons.

That matters because a considerable number of applications still use indicators to provide background status, quick actions or access to their main window.

Depending on your software selection, you may barely notice the absence of tray icons — or consider this extension essential.

It’s one of the most practical additions to a GNOME installation and a notable omission from the previous version of this roundup.

Naturally, there are many other GNOME Shell extensions which may suit particular workflows. We’ve concentrated on extensions which are actively useful, provide something distinctive, and currently support GNOME 50.

Extensions can occasionally clash when they modify the same parts of GNOME Shell. In particular, there is intentional overlap between some of the docks, taskbars, workspace tools, tiling extensions and system monitors in this roundup. They are included as alternatives rather than with the expectation that all 50 should be enabled simultaneously.
