Zope – object-oriented web application server

Zope is an object-oriented application server for publishing dynamic content and building database-backed websites. Its approach differs from frameworks organised primarily around request functions: application objects can be traversed and published through URLs, with permissions and persistence playing central roles.

The server is associated with ZODB, a transactional object database that can store application objects without requiring developers to translate every operation into relational tables. Zope also supplies a web management interface and a component-based ecosystem. The architecture has been used for content-managed sites, portals and applications needing fine-grained access control.

Zope’s security model is closely tied to publishing and object traversal. Application authors can define which operations are available to particular users rather than relying on URL filtering alone. Transactional storage also allows multiple coordinated object modifications to succeed or fail together.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Object publishing maps URLs to application objects and methods.
  • ZODB stores persistent objects with transactional semantics.
  • Fine-grained security declarations and permission checks control object access.
  • Web-based management interface handles application objects and configuration.
  • Zope Page Templates render dynamic HTML using template expressions.
  • HTTP server and WSGI integration support application hosting.
  • Component interfaces and adapters support reusable application behaviour.
  • Acquisition supplies contextual access to selected properties and methods.
  • WebDAV and other publishing integrations support content workflows where enabled.
  • Transaction management coordinates changes to persistent application data.
  • Relational database adapters can bridge external SQL-backed resources.
  • Request and response objects expose web-protocol data to application methods.
  • Object hierarchy and acquisition influence resource lookup and contextual behaviour.
  • Import and export facilities assist with selected persistent site content.
