SQuirreL SQL Client – graphical SQL client written in Java

The SQuirreL SQL Client is a database administration tool that allows you to view the structure of a JDBC compliant database, browse the data in tables, issue SQL commands etc. It uses JDBC to allow users to explore and interact with databases via a JDBC driver.

The software provides an editor that offers code completion and syntax highlighting for standard SQL.

It also provides a plugin architecture that allows plugin writers to modify much of the application’s behavior to provide database-specific functionality or features that are database-independent.

Features include:

  • Object Tree of session window allows for browsing database objects such as catalogs, schemas, tables, triggers, views, sequences, procedures, UDTs, etc.
  • Provides syntax highlighting. It can open, create, save and execute files containing SQL statements.
  • Code completion can be used to access drop-down lists of options that include keywords, tables, columns, views, stored procedures.
  • Supports simultaneous sessions with multiple databases. This allows comparing data and sharing SQL statements between databases.
  • A plugin architecture facilitates database vendor-specific extensions (information or actions not available using standard JDBC. There are a wide variety of plugins available.
  • Graph capabilities can generate charts showing table relationships:
    • Query Building with instant SQL query generation and executing.
    • Saving in JPEG format.
    • Printing.
    • Linking / copying Graphs from other sessions or directories.
  • Bookmarks – user-defined code templates. SQuirreL comes with several pre-defined example bookmarks for the most common SQL and DDL statements.
  • Internationalization support – there are translations for Bulgarian, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Czech, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, and Spanish,
  • Cross-platform support – runs under Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, and any other platform that has a JVM.
