edamame – terminal Markdown editor with live rendering

edamame is a terminal-based Markdown editor that combines formatted document rendering with direct text editing. Instead of displaying an entire document as raw Markdown source, it keeps most of the content rendered while revealing the underlying syntax on the line being edited.

This approach allows users to work with headings, lists, tables, links and other Markdown elements without constantly switching between editing and preview modes. The document remains readable throughout the editing process, while the original Markdown syntax is still readily accessible.

The editor pays particular attention to structured content. Tables are displayed as grids with individually editable cells, while supported terminals can display inline images, mathematical expressions and diagrams.

edamame also provides keyboard-driven navigation, optional Vim-style editing and tools for reviewing changes made by external programs. It is suitable for writing technical documentation, maintaining notes and editing Markdown files directly in a terminal.

This is free and open source software.
