needle – terminal dashboard for GitHub pull requests

needle is a terminal interface for GitHub pull requests that need a developer’s attention. Rather than presenting an undifferentiated feed of repository activity, it concentrates on work for which the user is the author or has been asked to provide a review.

The tool is intended to reduce the time spent checking pull-request pages throughout the day. It examines review requests, continuous-integration results and pull-request status so users can prioritise action without repeatedly visiting several repositories in a browser.

A developer may be following many repositories while being responsible for only a small subset of their open pull requests. Separating authored changes from incoming review requests makes the queue more actionable. The categorisation is based on recorded pull-request state, not an assessment of code quality.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Collects pull requests authored by the user and pull requests for which they have been requested as a reviewer.
  • Can optionally include review requests assigned through a team.
  • Shows the latest commit identifier associated with each selected pull request.
  • Summarises CI checks, distinguishing successful, failing, running and unavailable results.
  • Indicates whether a review is requested, already approved or has no current request.
  • Calculates an attention score to sort pull requests according to what may need action.
  • Groups results into categories so important items can be distinguished from routine activity.
  • Presents the resulting queue in a navigable text interface suitable for daily review work.
