Rotor is a stateless password manager that implements the LessPass approach to password generation. Instead of storing an encrypted database of passwords, it derives a site’s password from a master secret and the parameters associated with that site. The same inputs can be used to reproduce the same result when the password is required again.
This model reduces the need to maintain or synchronize a conventional vault, although users must retain the correct master secret and profile settings. Rotor can optionally connect to a compatible LessPass server to retrieve and maintain password profiles. The server is not needed to generate passwords locally once the required inputs are known.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Generates deterministic passwords from a master secret and site-specific information.
- Uses a stateless model rather than a conventional password database.
- Implements algorithms compatible with LessPass.
- Supports reusable site profiles containing password-generation parameters.
- Can connect to a compatible LessPass server for storing and retrieving profiles.
- Allows passwords to be regenerated without storing the passwords themselves.
- Provides a graphical interface for managing the generation workflow.
- Keeps server connectivity optional for users who prefer a local workflow.
