git-prompt.zsh is a lightweight Git status prompt for Zsh. It concentrates on providing repository status information rather than attempting to become a complete shell theme, leaving users free to incorporate its gitprompt function into their own prompt design.
The implementation uses normal Git commands and awk rather than a separate Git status daemon. Work is performed asynchronously when a new prompt is drawn, helping avoid blocking the interactive shell while Git gathers repository information.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Provides a dedicated gitprompt function that can be embedded in a custom Zsh prompt.
- Implemented using shell code and awk without requiring Python or Haskell.
- Uses standard Git rather than a separate long-running Git status daemon.
- Runs the Git status command asynchronously when a new prompt is drawn.
- Invokes Git only once for each prompt refresh.
- Avoids caching repository state so untracked-file information remains reliable.
- Supports configuration of the awk implementation used to process Git status information.
- Can prefer faster awk implementations when they are available.
- Designed to provide Git status information rather than imposing a complete shell prompt or theme.
- Repository changes made by another process are reflected when the next prompt is drawn.
- Can be sourced directly from a user’s Zsh configuration or loaded through common Zsh plugin managers.
