Ebony is a graphical client for Music Player Daemon (MPD) designed for browsing and controlling music collections. It provides a GTK4 interface following the GNOME Human Interface Guidelines, with an emphasis on navigating music using descriptive metadata.
The application is particularly interesting for listeners with classical music collections. Classical recordings often involve composers, performers, conductors and ensembles, making conventional artist and album browsing less effective. Ebony recognises the importance of these different roles and provides dedicated support for exploring classical recordings.
Ebony works as a remote controller for MPD and compatible players such as Volumio. The music is managed and played by the connected server rather than by the client itself.
Its interface is designed around library exploration, allowing users to move between different parts of their collection and select music for playback. The quality of the browsing experience depends on the metadata stored in the music files.
This is free and open source software.
