status.sh, hosted in the static_status repository, is a Bash script that checks services and generates a static status page. It is suited to administrators who prefer a text-configured monitoring tool with output that can be published by an ordinary web server.
Checks run when the script is invoked, so a scheduler can regenerate the page at the required interval. Monitoring and publication remain separate: visitors read the generated results without needing access to the machine performing the checks.
The script also accommodates checks specific to an organisation, making it useful where a simple successful HTTP response does not fully describe service health.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Check websites using HTTP requests, test network ports and check host reachability with ping.
- Inspect traceroute results to determine whether a specified host appears along a network route.
- Use custom shell scripts to test conditions beyond the built-in network checks.
- Interpret custom check results as available, degraded or failed using distinct return codes.
- Pass arguments to custom scripts for checks that need additional configuration.
- Display descriptive service names instead of exposing raw hostnames, addresses or URLs.
- Generate an HTML overview showing service conditions and overall infrastructure status.
- Include maintenance notices and information about past incidents.
- Track how long a service has remained in its reported condition.
- Generate JSON output containing check results, status duration and update timestamps.
- Create an SVG status indicator for embedding in another website.
- Use the accompanying alert script for email, SMS or Pushover notifications.
- Customise behaviour through a separate configuration file and select quiet, verbose or debugging output.
- Cross-platform support – runs on Linux and macOS.
