Nitric – cloud application framework with infrastructure from code

Nitric is a framework for developing cloud applications with infrastructure requirements defined directly in application code. It aims to reduce the amount of configuration needed to build and deploy backend services.

Developers describe the resources their applications need, such as APIs, storage buckets, databases and message queues. Nitric interprets these requirements and provisions the corresponding infrastructure on the selected cloud platform.

The framework separates application logic from the underlying cloud services. This makes it possible to develop applications locally and deploy them to different environments without rewriting the application for each provider. Nitric is designed for developers building APIs, event-driven services and other cloud backends.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Define cloud infrastructure requirements directly within application code.
  • SDKs for JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Go and Dart.
  • Create HTTP APIs and backend services without manually configuring the underlying cloud resources.
  • Support for cloud databases, object storage buckets and key-value stores.
  • Messaging facilities using queues and publish-subscribe topics.
  • Define permissions alongside resource declarations to control application access.
  • Automatically provision the required infrastructure and associated access policies.
  • Local development environment for running and testing applications before deployment.
  • Local dashboard for inspecting application resources and development activity.
  • Command-line tools for creating projects and managing application deployments.
  • Deploy applications to Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.
  • Deployment providers using Pulumi and Terraform for infrastructure provisioning.
  • Custom provider architecture for extending deployment support to additional infrastructure environments.
  • Decouple application logic from provider-specific services and infrastructure configuration.
  • Escape hatches for customising resources when a deployment requires functionality beyond the standard abstractions.
  • Examples and templates for building APIs, services and event-driven applications.
