Mutagen is a synchronization and network forwarding tool aimed particularly at development workflows where files and services span local and remote environments. It allows developers to continue using local editors, build tools and other familiar applications while working with code residing on remote machines or inside containers.
Synchronization sessions connect two endpoints and keep their contents coordinated without requiring the remote filesystem to be mounted directly on the local machine. Endpoints can represent local paths, SSH-accessible systems or container environments. Mutagen also provides network forwarding, letting TCP and Unix-domain socket connections cross boundaries between development environments.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Provides high-performance bidirectional file synchronization.
- Supports local filesystem endpoints.
- Connects to remote systems through SSH.
- Supports synchronization with container environments.
- Detects filesystem changes and propagates them between synchronization endpoints.
- Provides configurable synchronization modes for different workflows.
- Supports ignore rules for excluding files and directories.
- Offers network forwarding alongside file synchronization.
- Can forward TCP connections between environments.
- Supports Unix-domain socket forwarding where appropriate.
- Runs synchronization sessions through a background daemon controlled by the command-line client.
- Provides project configuration for defining groups of synchronization and forwarding sessions.
- Includes remote agents that are deployed automatically when required.
- Supports integration with remote-development and container-based workflows.
