Kookbook – recipe manager using structured Markdown files

Kookbook is a graphical recipe manager. Instead of storing a cookbook in a dedicated database, it works with Markdown documents, which remain easy to inspect and maintain outside the application.

Its approach separates reading from editing. Kookbook presents recipes in an accessible interface while relying on an external text editor to make changes. This keeps the recipes independent of the application and avoids locking a collection into a specialised database format.

The underlying files can be stored wherever you prefer, making it possible to keep a recipe collection under version control or synchronise it using external services such as Git or Nextcloud.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Organises recipes stored in files with the .recipe.md extension, using ordinary directories and subdirectories to group related dishes.
  • Renders recipes as formatted Markdown, making ingredients and cooking instructions easy to read.
  • Provides a searchable title index for quickly locating individual recipes.
  • Indexes recipes by tags, allowing dishes to be grouped by categories such as vegetarian, desserts or family favourites.
  • Offers an ingredient index for finding recipes that use a particular ingredient, useful when deciding what to cook with available supplies.
  • Extracts structured ingredient information from recipe files, including ingredient names, quantities and measurement units.
  • Supports recipe metadata such as tags and authors, with facilities for inspecting the extracted information.
  • Creates recipes from a template and opens them in the system’s configured text editor.
  • Opens existing recipes in an external editor and updates their display when changes are saved.
  • Includes a raw Markdown view to help recipe authors understand how their files are being interpreted.
  • Offers printing and print preview facilities for producing paper copies of recipes.
  • Allows individual interface panes to be shown or hidden, and provides a refresh command for detecting externally added or removed recipes.
