Flaca is a command-line utility designed to squeeze GIF, JPEG and PNG images without changing their visual content.
It is intended for production web assets, where reducing byte size can lower bandwidth use and improve page delivery. Rather than favouring speed or low resource consumption, Flaca performs exhaustive optimisation to chase smaller files, making it particularly suited to multi-core systems and batch workflows. It accepts files, directories and lists of paths, so collections of web graphics can be processed in a single run.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Losslessly recompresses GIF, JPEG and PNG images while preserving the rendered image.
- Recursively searches directories and can accept multiple individual files in the same command.
- Reads absolute paths from a text file or standard input for scripted processing queues.
- Runs jobs in parallel across logical CPU cores, with an option to cap simultaneous workers.
- Lets users disable GIF, JPEG or PNG processing independently when a batch should be restricted to selected formats.
- Can skip images above a chosen pixel count to reduce the risk of excessive memory use.
- Removes unnecessary metadata by default for web optimisation, with an option to attempt preservation when required.
- Can preserve original file access and modification times and optionally ignore symbolic links.
- Includes a progress display and supports graceful early termination of queued work.
- Uses specialised format-specific optimisation, including MozJPEG and Oxipng-based processing.
