libjpeg-turbo is a high-performance JPEG image codec designed as a faster replacement for traditional libjpeg implementations. It accelerates baseline and progressive JPEG compression and decompression with SIMD instructions on supported processors while retaining compatibility with the widely used libjpeg API.
The project also provides the simpler TurboJPEG API for applications that need straightforward in-memory compression, decompression and image transformation. Its command-line utilities cover encoding, decoding, transcoding and benchmarking, making the project useful both as a development library and as a collection of practical JPEG tools.
libjpeg-turbo is an ISO/IEC and ITU-T reference implementation of the JPEG standard.
