BrosTrend Linux USB WiFi Adapter AC1200 AC1L Review

Last Updated on December 29, 2022

Summary

Performance of the BrosTrend USB key is good. Data transfer speeds are consistent with our expectations for a USB key with two internal antennas but it fares comparatively less well over longer distances compared to a T470 laptop’s internal wireless.

Installation of the driver is a breeze under both Ubuntu and Manjaro. The installation script is well written and documented with comments.

It’s so refreshing to see a WiFi hardware provider that actually provides Linux support. BrosTrend provides a support ticket in the event that you run into any issues installing their driver. This support covers their drivers, but not other drivers available from other sources such as GitHub repositories. Bear in mind that BrosTrend don’t support some Linux distros such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux or openSUSE.

Another plus factor is that the USB key is small enough that it doesn’t block adjacent ports.

The key supports Monitor mode, IBSS, Managed, AP, P2P-client, and P2P-GO. There’s support for advanced security (WPA2/WPA/WEP, AES/PSK/TKIP, 802.1x).

We will review the AC1200 Long Range USB WiFi Adapter for Linux (Model AC3L) in our next article and compare performance with the AC1200.
