v02enc is a password-based command-line encryption utility designed to let the same encrypted data be opened by several recipients. Each recipient can have a separate password or key source, avoiding the need for everyone to share one common secret.
A distinctive part of the design is its update operation. Someone who knows the password for one recipient can replace the plaintext content while preserving access for the other recipients already recorded in the encrypted file. This is useful for shared encrypted documents and configuration files that need to be revised over time.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Supports several recipients within one encrypted message, with independently protected access for each recipient.
- Uses Encrypt-then-MAC with AES-256-CTR for confidentiality and HMAC-SHA-256 for authentication.
- Derives password-protection subkeys with PBKDF2-SHA-256 and a separate random salt.
- Can update an existing encrypted file while retaining the previously configured recipient set.
- Accepts passwords, key files and supported keychain values as recipient credentials.
- Reads from files or standard input and can write plaintext or encrypted data to standard output.
- Offers ASCII-armoured output for text-oriented storage or transport.
- Includes helper scripts for viewing encrypted changes with Git and Mercurial.
- Provides helpers for transparently editing encrypted files and using encrypted WireGuard configuration files.
