kumaOS – declarative Fedora-based Linux distribution

kumaOS is a Fedora-based Linux distribution built around declarative system configuration, atomic updates and an immutable operating system. It uses Fedora bootc to construct complete system images from a configuration file rather than modifying the installed system directly.

The distribution uses the Niri Wayland compositor with a custom desktop shell called kumaUI. An experimental COSMIC desktop option is also available, together with a headless configuration. Applications and tools can be managed through RPM packages, Flatpak and Homebrew, with system configuration defined in TOML.

kumaOS supports automatic rollback following unsuccessful updates, Btrfs snapshots, offsite backups and configuration drift detection. Its command-line utility provides facilities for building images, applying updates, managing deployments and restoring previous system states.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")?

A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system.

Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies.

Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros.
