Xecrets Cli is a cross-platform command-line encryption toolbox built from the open source AxCrypt codebase. It is designed for people and scripts that need AxCrypt-compatible encryption without depending on a graphical interface or an online service.
The program works locally and supports both password-based and public-key workflows. Source builds are available under the GNU GPL without feature restrictions. Builds distributed by the developer place limits on some programmatic features unless covered by a maintenance subscription, while decryption remains available without those limits.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Encrypts and decrypts AxCrypt-compatible files, including compatibility with older AxCrypt encrypted data.
- Uses AES-256 for newly encrypted file content and supports password-protected files.
- Creates and uses public/private key pairs and can encrypt data for public-key recipients.
- Imports and exports public keys for sharing encrypted files without exchanging a secret password.
- Supports SLIP-0039 Shamir Secret Sharing for splitting a secret into shares and later recombining them.
- Provides JWT key generation, signing and verification operations alongside its file-encryption commands.
- Can read options from files or environment variables for scripting and automated workflows.
- Offers human-readable text logging or structured JSON output for software integration.
- Includes secure file wiping, compression, overwrite controls, dry-run operation and progress reporting.
