TuxMath – arcade-style educational video game

Tux, of Math Command (known as TuxMath) is an open source arcade-style video game for learning mathematics, initially created for Linux. The main goal is to make it effective and fun!

You play the part of Commander Tux, as he defends his friends from an attack of math equations. The game-play mechanic is based loosely on that of the arcade game Missile Command, but with comets falling on cities, rather than missiles. Like Missile Command, players attempt to protect their cities. Your mission is to protect your penguin’s igloos from the math problem “comets” that drop out of the sky.

As of version 1.7.0, TuxMath also includes a completely new game activity, “Factoroids”, which gives practice in factoring numbers and simplifying fractions, as well as zapping rocks floating through space.

• Multiple user support (useful for schools).
• On-screen tutorials.
• High score table.
• Training Academy lessons allow the players to pause the game and control its speed, and offer a chance to build confidence with new facts.
• Multiplayer mode.
• Missions.
• Arcade games:
  • Space Cadet – simple addition.
  • Scout – addition and subtraction to ten.
  • Ranger – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to ten.
  • Ace – all four operations with operands to 20, including negative numbers and “missing number” type questions.
  • Commando – all of above plus multiple operands – e.g. -3 x ? + 14 = 2.
• Factoroids: activity to train factorization.
• Localization to a number of languages (Norwegian-Nynorsk, Norwegian-Bokmal, Czech, Dutch and French).
