Aprelendo – learn vocabulary from real content

Aprelendo is a self-hosted language-learning platform aimed especially at intermediate and advanced learners who want to acquire vocabulary from material they genuinely want to read or watch.

Instead of beginning with isolated vocabulary lists, it turns authentic content into study material and keeps newly encountered words tied to their original context. A typical workflow involves importing material, reading or watching it inside Aprelendo, looking up unfamiliar vocabulary, saving useful terms, and revisiting them later. The software is designed to complement rather than replace grammar study, conversation, classes, and other language-learning methods.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Study from ebooks, audiobooks, web texts and articles, YouTube videos, and offline videos.
  • Look up unfamiliar words while working through imported material and save them directly from context.
  • Review saved vocabulary with flashcards and cloze cards.
  • Includes an optional Total Reading workflow combining reading, listening, speaking, dictation, and review.
  • Supports lighter study sessions based around reading and vocabulary review when the full workflow is unnecessary.
  • Keeps vocabulary associated with the sentences, audio, or scenes in which it was encountered.
  • Can use audio-backed texts to combine written material with listening practice.
  • Self-hosted deployment gives users control over the installation and stored learning material.
  • Installation tooling creates persistent storage for uploads and runtime data.
