Trophy is a terminal-based 3D model viewer written in Go. It allows users to open and inspect 3D objects without launching a conventional graphical viewer, making it useful when working predominantly from the command line.
The application uses software rendering to display models inside the terminal. It does not require a dedicated GPU and can operate through an SSH connection, provided the terminal supports the necessary display capabilities.
Trophy offers interactive navigation with mouse and keyboard controls. Models can be rotated, zoomed and spun, with momentum-based movement giving rotation a more natural feel.
Unlike simple ASCII viewers, Trophy supports textured rendering, including textures embedded in GLB files. It also exposes controls for lighting and the way surfaces are drawn, allowing users to examine the geometry or appearance of a model.
The project includes reusable rendering components for developers who want to incorporate its mathematical operations, model loading and software rasterisation into other Go applications.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Supports OBJ, GLB and STL model files.
- Loads embedded textures from GLB models.
- Can apply a separate image texture to an OBJ model.
- Software rendering does not require GPU acceleration.
- Interactive mouse and keyboard controls for rotating and zooming models.
- Momentum-based rotation provides smooth model movement.
- Spin mode enables continuous model rotation.
- Supports rotation around pitch, yaw and roll axes.
- Adjustable background colour and target frame rate.
- Toggle wireframe rendering, textures and backface culling.
- Interactive lighting control allows the light source to be repositioned.
- Optional heads-up display provides information while viewing a model.
- Model information command displays details without starting the interactive viewer.
- Reusable Go packages provide model loading, mathematical operations, camera handling and software rasterisation.
