lule is a command-line colour generator that derives ANSI colour schemes from wallpapers. It can produce the familiar 16 terminal colours as well as a complete 256-colour palette.
The software has grown beyond simply recolouring a terminal. Its configuration and templating facilities make it possible to use one generated palette across desktop applications, while handlers can perform additional actions once a new scheme has been produced.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Extracts colours from wallpaper images and builds ANSI colour schemes.
- Produces both a 16-colour ANSI palette and a full 256-colour set.
- Supports dark and light themes with controls for saturation, illumination, hue and colour blending.
- Enforces configurable WCAG contrast levels so terminal colours remain readable against the generated background.
- Supports deterministic palette generation through fixed seeds.
- Can load named colour schemes instead of extracting colours from an image.
- Ships templates for common formats including CSS, SCSS, INI, TOML, JSON and Xresources.
- Provides a template language with colour transformations, formatting filters and conditional processing.
- Uses Lua configuration for registering templates and post-generation handlers.
- Can recolour running terminals and invoke commands after a scheme has been generated.
- Offers JSON and text output for integration with scripts and other tools.
- Includes a daemon mode for automatically cycling wallpapers and colour schemes.
