GenealogyJ is a full-featured viewer and editor for genealogic data, suitable for the hobbyist, family historian and genealogy researcher.
GenJ supports the GEDCOM standard and offers family tree, table, timeline views and more.
The software provides different graphical components for working on your family tree.
It also includes a copy of the freeware library JFreeChart.
Key Features
- Generates reports:
- Table – this view shows entities in rows – the columns are properties of those entities (e.g. Name, Sex and Birth Date).
- Tree – when looking at the information contained in a GEDCOM file through this view family-relationships are key. To build a visual tree GenJ starts with the root of the tree (an individual or family) and collects all ancestors and descendants of that root. It generates high quality family trees, including portraits.
- Timeline – shows events stored in a Gedcom file from left to right on a timeline. It starts at the earliest point in time of an event reaching to the latest event.
- Edit – allows the user to edit the values associated with an entity (or record) within GenJ.
- Report – a report is a Java class implementing an interface to GenJ.
- Navigator – allows you to follow relationships of individuals globally.
- Entity – renders one entity and its properties into a single pane.
- Search – allows users to search for properties by their contained values.
- Geo – maps events geographically.

- Submitter.
- Repository.
- Uses the industry standard .GED database.
- Uses the Swing Toolkit for presenting information.
