dns-lexicon, commonly known as Lexicon, provides a provider-agnostic way to manipulate DNS records. It is intended for automation that needs to work across different DNS services without maintaining a separate integration for every provider.
The project is particularly useful where DNS records must be created or changed programmatically, such as certificate issuance, deployment workflows and infrastructure management. Providers still expose different authentication schemes and capabilities, but Lexicon normalizes common record operations behind one configuration model.
Commands identify the provider, operation, domain, record type, name and content explicitly, making common changes straightforward to invoke from scripts without an interactive workflow. Provider integrations cover hosted cloud services, specialist DNS platforms and self-managed systems, so the same project can span substantially different deployment models.
This is free and open source software.
Key Features
- Creates, lists, updates and deletes DNS records through a standardized interface.
- Can be used directly as a command-line utility or embedded in Python applications as a library.
- Supports a broad collection of DNS providers, including Cloudflare, Amazon Route 53, Azure DNS, Google Cloud DNS, PowerDNS, DigitalOcean and many others.
- Its configuration resolver can combine environment variables with settings supplied directly by an application.
- Works well with ACME and certificate-management workflows where temporary DNS records need to be created and removed automatically.
- Keeps provider-specific authentication and API handling inside individual provider implementations.
- Includes support for RFC 2136 dynamic DNS alongside API-driven hosted DNS services.
- Provides documentation for adding provider integrations when a DNS service exposes a suitable API.
