Das Keyboard 5QS Mark II Review – Smart RGB mechanical keyboard

What Could Be Better

The fixed cable is the most obvious weakness. A detachable USB-C cable should be expected at this price. The keycaps are another letdown, especially when some cheaper keyboards now ship with PBT keycaps.

There’s also no wireless connectivity, no hot-swappable switch support, no USB hub, and no onboard profile storage. The Q software gives the keyboard a unique identity, but it won’t be useful enough for everyone to offset those omissions.

Using the wrist rest feels like a necessity, as the keyboard’s front edge is fairly sharp and can become uncomfortable during longer typing sessions. It does make typing much more comfortable, though.

Value

At $229 for the Brown or Red switch versions, the Das Keyboard 5QS Mark II is not cheap. That price puts it up against keyboards with better keycaps, wireless support, hot-swappable switches, more refined sound, and more modern construction.

The 5QS Mark II makes more sense if you specifically want a full-size wired keyboard with Linux support, strong RGB, Cherry MX2A switches, and smart notification features. If you’re simply chasing the best typing feel for the money, it might not be for you.

Verdict

The Das Keyboard 5QS Mark II is a sturdy, comfortable, and distinctive full-size mechanical keyboard. It has a superb volume knob, a sensible productivity layout, bright RGB lighting, and stronger Linux support than most premium keyboards.

But it also feels caught between generations. While the typing experience is very good, the fixed USB-A cable feels dated, and the keycaps could be better.

This keyboard is best for users who want a traditional full-size mechanical board with strong build quality, Linux support, and RGB notification features they’ll actually use. For everyone else, the price makes it difficult to recommend without reservations.
