TCExam is a free, open source FLOSS Computer-Based Assessment software system for electronic exams (also known as E-assessment, Computer-Based Testing or e-exam) that enables educators and trainers to author, schedule, deliver, and report on quizzes, tests and exams. It is web based software that runs on a number of different platforms including Linux.
Compared to the traditional Pen-and-Paper Testing (PPT), TCExam simplifies the whole process of evaluation reducing costs and improving quality and reliability of the examinations.
TCExam comes in a variety of languages and is already used all over the world by top universities, schools, private and public institutions, independent educators and research centers.

- Low hardware requirements – install on almost any computer.
- Flexibility and Configurability – designed to offer a high degree of adaptability to cover a great variety of usage scenarios.
- Accessibility and Usability: TCExam Web interface conforms to the XHTML 1.0 Strict standard, the guidelines on Accessibility (W3C-WAI-WCAG 1.0) and Usability, to provide equal access and equal opportunity to people with disabilities, including blindness.
- Questions are grouped into modules and topics. TCExam can store an unlimited number of modules.
- Common mark-up language, similar to the common BBCode, to add text formatting, images, multimedia objects (audio and video) and mathematical formulas (supports LaTeX).
- Paper Testing with Optical Character Recognition (OMR) to import users’ answers from paper sheets.
- Common Three-Tier structure. Administration and public areas are physically separated on file system to improve security. It uses SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption and includes various authentication levels to discriminate the access to the various sections (user/password, access level, group, IP address).
- Results and Statistics – outputs a variety of result pages, enabling various selection filters and providing numerous statistical indexes.
- Multimedia Content – uses a common mark-up language to add text formatting, images, multimedia objects (audio and video) and mathematical formulas (supports LaTeX).
- Unique Tests – simultaneously generate unique tests for different users by randomly selecting and sorting questions and alternative answers.
- Offline testing.
- Export or import users, questions or results data using various open formats: CSV (Comma Separated Values), XML (eXtensible Mark-up Language) and PDF (Portable Document Format).
- Web-based application developed on the popular LAMP platform (GNU-Linux Operative System, Apache Web server, MySQL Database Management System and PHP programming language).
- RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial In User Service), LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) and CAS (Central Authentication Service) modules, to directly access existing large database of users.
- Web-based Architecture.
- Internationalization support adopting the UTF-8, Unicode and TMX standards.
