Zim – Zsh configuration framework

Zim is a Zsh configuration framework that combines a plugin manager with a collection of modules and themes.

It is designed to keep shell startup responsive while giving users a structured way to assemble and maintain their Zsh environment. Modules are declared in ~/.zimrc, and Zim generates a static initialization script that is sourced at startup, avoiding repeated configuration work each time a new shell is opened.

This is free and open source software.

Key Features

  • Installs modules from the Zim organization, other GitHub repositories, custom repository URLs, or existing local paths.
  • Supports selecting branches or tags, assigning custom module names, choosing root subdirectories, and defining multiple roots for a module.
  • Can discover suitable initialization files and functions automatically, or use explicitly configured source files, autoloaded functions, fpath entries, and commands.
  • Allows conditional module initialization using arbitrary tests, the presence of a command, or the current OSTYPE value.
  • Can install and update modules with Git or its lighter degit mechanism, with automatic fallback when Git is unavailable.
  • Supports post-install and post-update commands for module-specific setup or generation tasks.
  • Lets users freeze modules so they are not updated, or disable module roots without uninstalling the underlying module.
  • Provides dedicated actions for installing, uninstalling, updating, and upgrading the framework and its managed modules.
  • Offers control over Git submodules and supports modules whose files need to be generated with custom commands.
  • Allows the framework directory and configuration file location to be changed through `ZIM_HOME` and `ZIM_CONFIG_FILE`.
  • Supports disabling update checks and suppressing colour output for pipes, non-interactive SSH commands, and other automation contexts.
