Revenant OS – local-first AI Linux distribution for rugged field laptops

Revenant OS is a Linux distribution designed for rugged field computing, with the Panasonic Toughbook CF-52 as its primary target. It is intended to turn older x86_64 field laptops into self-contained workstations that can operate without relying on cloud services, external API keys, or online accounts.

The distribution takes an unusually specialised approach. Rather than aiming to be a general-purpose desktop for every machine, it combines hardware-specific tuning with an integrated local software stack for voice interaction, system assistance, and offline operation. It also provides a choice between a conventional desktop environment and a lightweight tiling window manager. Although centred on the CF-52, the project also targets compatible x86_64 field hardware.

This is free and open source software.
